What do we learn about?

We learn about lots of things! Here is a very light overview, and you will also recieve more detailed half-termly overviews (CLICK HERE to view them online).

Autumn term 1

Settling in and science - exploring range of materials

Autumn term 2

History - personal timelines, toys

Spring term 1

Science - body parts and senses

Spring term 2

Art - the whole school takes part in a new project each year. Take a look at past projects here.

Summer term 1

Science - plants - growing and caring for them

Summer term 2

Geography - local trip – Where will we go and how will we get there?

Homework

There is no homework in Reception. Reading with your child is the most valuable way that you can support their learning - we cannot over-emphasise this! From Year 1 upwards, children receive a home-school learning grid every two weeks. There is more information about this here.

Learning bags and library

Don't forget to bring your learning bag every day.  The children will be changing books regularly and this will be recorded in their home/school reading diary.  Children can also borrow books from our class library to share at home.  They can change these books any day.

Please read with your child as often as you can - it is the most helpful way to support their learning.

Library day is Tuesday. Your child will be able to choose a book to take home and given a special plastic wallet to keep their library book in.

Class assemblies

Each term, parents and carers are welcome to come to the hall and see a class assembly. We call these assemblies '10 minutes of fame!' They are not intended to be polished performances, just a little window into what children have been learning about.

If you would like to know when your child's class assembly is, please look at the school newsletter which goes out every fortnight.

Certificates

Starting from Reception summer term, children will receive one certificate per term for their achievements. Children will continue to receive one certificate per term throughout their time at our school.

Happiness and well-being of children

We recognise that starting Reception is a big step for children and parents/carers. For this reason, you will be offered a slot with the class teacher to discuss how this big step is going. This will take place during the autumn term.

Of course we love to discuss learning too! We will discuss your child's learning during parents' evenings, which you can sign up for electronically. We will send you a prompt to do this.
