Year 5 interview a Religious Leader

What sort of person is a religious leader?

Before lunch, Reverend Robin came in to answer some questions about being a religious leader as we (Year 5) are learning about religious leaders from different faiths in RE.
He looked a little nervous and said it was almost as tough as his last job interview! He gave us plenty to think about.

Questions about leadership

B: What are the three most important qualities of any leader?

Reverend Robin: Well you need to have a strong sense of ‘God’. I also have to support people in the congregation. You have to allow anyone to come in and feel loved.

M: Can anyone be a religious leader?

Reverend Robin: Yes! Anyone! It’s not a job. It’s a calling… I was called by God.

Questions about day to day work

Ro: Who do you work for?
Reverend Robin: The Methodist Church employ me but I also work for God.

El: Is being a religious leader hard work?
Reverend Robin: Absolutely! I only get 1 day off a week. If there’s an emergency on my day off, I still have to go in. I work about 65 hours a week.

An: What is the most important part of your job as a religious leader?
Reverend Robin:Being there for people when things are hard for them. I go out and visit them there’s also joyful stuff like weddings. Sadly, I go to see people who are dying, but that can be joyful for them, which you may find surprising.

Fr: What happens in a typical day?
Reverend Robin: No day is the same as another day and that’s my favourite thing about the job. I wake up thinking: what’s gonna happen? I have lots of meetings with different people. I also listen to students at Brighton University and tonight I have a big meeting. I’m very busy!

Nin: Do you meet leaders from different religions?
Reverend Robin: I haven’t got involved in Brighton but in Birmingham I did get involved with leaders from other religions.

Nis: Do religious leaders get paid for their work?
Reverend Robin: Yes I get a stipend. This is a small amount per month. I also get a house to live in – some houses are lovely and some aren’t quite so lovely!

Whole School

Here are some images from our displays and assemblies where we celebrate diversity within our school and local community.

We collected food for the unemployment centre.
